SUMMARY:ONE DAY RETREAT – Shinrin-Yoku (Forest Bathing) and Metta practices\, May 2024
DESCRIPTION:Walking mediation in nature\nA Shinrin-Yoku forest bathing walk consists of a series of activities & sits\, designed to help the participants to bathe in the surroundings\, the environment and energy of the forest\, allowing them to slow down\, breathe\, and refocus on their body\, while connecting to their various senses. \nMore than just a nature walk\, the Japanese practice of shinrin yoku\, or Forest Bathing\, is good for both physical and mental wellbeing. It is proven to reduce stress hormone production\, improve feelings of happiness and free up creativity\, as well as lower heart rate and blood pressure\, boost the immune system and accelerate recovery from illness. \nIn 1982\, the Japanese Ministry of Agriculture\, Forestry\, and Fisheries created the term shinrin-yoku\, which translates to “forest bathing” or “absorbing the forest atmosphere.” The practice encourages people to simply spend time in nature — no actual bathing required \nThe benefits of immersing ourselves in nature is many-fold. Research conducted around the world has shown a range of physical benefits\, including: \n\nReduced blood pressure\nReduced pulse rates\nReduced blood sugar\nReduced stress hormones levels\nIncreased white blood cells that fights off infections and cancer\nStrengthened immune systems\nEnhanced mood\n\nWe will also do metta practice.  Metta is loving kindness\, and the practice of sending metta to ourselves and all sentient beings is foundational to our practice.   \nSuggested donation $50.00. No one will be refused participation due to funds. \n\nREGISTER HERE\n\nNot a local? Book lodging at 509.395.2030 / business@tlabbey.com \nThere are various options available\, depending on the event.  1. Trout Lake Abbey B&B private or hostel style rooms.  2. Meditations huts.  3. Futons either in the temple or the Mountain View Room.  4. Camping \nPlease call in advance to inquire about availability.

SUMMARY:Saturday Morning Meditation @ Mt. Adams Zen (Saturdays now online!)
DESCRIPTION:Due to the COVID-19 pandemic and closure of our temple to the public\, Saturday’s temple service can now be attended online via zoom HERE. \n5 different teachers from our temple will rotate through giving dharma talks each week \nWe encourage you to continue a daily practice at home\, please see below for a sample schedule for holding temple by yourself or with you family.  \n \nSimple Sangha Practice – a simple way to keep the group practice\ngoing for an individual\n I will miss our Sangha meditations. Let us hope the virus pandemic passes quickly and that we all remain healthy. Following Buddha’s teachings\, please do not think of the virus as good or bad. Think rather that it is part of the great sufferings in life (Duhkha or Dukkha). Let us focus our thought on loving kindness and well wishing for ourselves and others. -Thay Kozen\n \nI would encourage all of us to keep up our practice of meditation and mindful practices.\nBelow are our basic practices for our Trinity group practice:\n \nCheck In\nTake a deep breath. What am I thinking right now? What is my fear? What is my hope?\n \n⊕Chant Of Compassion:\nWe surround all forms of life with infinite love and compassion.\nEspecially\, do we send out compassionate thoughts to those in suffering and sorrow\,\nto those in doubt and ignorance\,\nto all who are striving to attain truth\, and\nto those whose feet stand close to the great change called death\, we send forth all wisdom\, mercy and love.\n⊕ May the infinite light of wisdom and compassion so shine within us that the errors and vanities of self may be dispelled. So shall we understand the changing nature of existence and awaken into spiritual peace.\n \nMetta\nMay I be Well\, May I be Happy\nMay I know Love\, May I know Peace\n \nMay you be Well\, May you be Happy\nMay you know Love\, May you know Peace\n \nStart out by holding your right hand over the center of your chest\, then place your left hand over your right one and gently hug your chest.\nThen say the above sentences.  Think of yourself as you say the “May I …” Then think of a loved one (or one easy to love) as you say the “May you…” Next think of someone unknown to you and say “May you…” Then to cleanse your heart\, think of someone who has caused you pain or distress and repeat the “May you…” Next think of all beings of fur\, feather\, scale and skin and say “May you…”Finally we return to ourselves and say “May I…”\n \nThe Buddha tells us – What we think we become.\n \nStarting Meditation\n⊕ Body\, breath\, and mind held in perfect oneness\, I send my heart along with the sound of this bell. May the hearers awaken from forgetfulness and transcend the path of anxiety and sorrow\n⊕ Listen\, listen\, this wonderful sound brings me back to my true home.\n \nMeditation (Use The 3 Breaths To Start Your Meditation\, then sit for 25 minutes)\nBreathing In “I know I am breathing in”\nBreathing Out “I know I am breathing out”\nBreathing In “I am aware of the breath in my body”\nBreathing Out “I am aware of the breath in my body”\nBreathing In “I calm my body”\nBreathing Out “I calm my body”\n \nMeditate for 25 to 30 min.\n \nOffering Of Merit\n⊕ May the merit of this penetrate into each thing in all places\,\nso that we and every sentient being together\, can realize the Buddha’s way. (3X)\n⊕ All Buddhas throughout space and time\, All Bodhisattvas (one who is on the path of awakening or destined to become a Buddha)\, Mahasattvas (Great Beings)\, wisdom beyond Wisdom\, Maha Prajna Paramita (the great perfected way of seeing the nature of reality).\nNamo tassa bhagavato arahato sammasambuddhassa\n  \n

SUMMARY:Volunteer Day – Grounds Cleanup
DESCRIPTION:JOIN US TO KEEP OUR TEMPLE GROUNDS BEAUTIFUL\nShortly after the morning meditation/metta service (which we highly recommend) please stay to volunteer as a group to do some light grounds cleanup–weeding\, planting\, trimming\, etc. It’s more fun than it sounds as you’ll be working side-by-side with a wonderfully warm and welcoming group of people. Work is a foundational part of the Buddhist ethic and can be a valuable part of your daily practice. Working with mindfulness is great practice for living mindfully in your day-to-day life. Come for any period of time as your schedule permits. Anything is appreciated.  \nThis work party will include metta\, gratitude\, and mindfulness practice.
